Reading grade 6 and 7:  Time for  a summary of this week's chapters 2-4!

Valli's 'happiest day' continues as she travels high on top of a coal truck.  This is very exciting for her because it is her very first ride in a motorized vehicle, and she sees green fields for the first time.  Finally, the truck stops, and she is discovered.  After some arguing, the two men take her to a beautiful middle-aged woman.  She seems to be the owner of the large home with many women and children who seem well-clothed and fed (it is a brothel, but Valli never realizes it).  For the first time, Valli doesn't have to eat the leftover food from her cousins, and she also gets her first bath.  It is after the bath, when one of the women is cutting her toenails, that Valli's leprosy is discovered.  She doesn't know why they throw her out so quickly.  Dejected and lonely, Valli wanders around Kolkata until an old man and his goat make her smile.  He advises her to give away the soap she still carries from her bath, and, in so doing, she makes friends with a homeless family whose language she doesn't speak.  She begins to develop the philosophy and behaviours she needs to survive as a homeless person:  she decides that, since everything on earth is borrowed, she doesn't need to own anything.  She resumes her enjoyment of living.

Memory Work grade 6:  Th:  Ps. 50:8; next Th:  Ps. 55:12; students no longer need to learn Amos 3:1-8 because we have too many songs to learn (and a text to review) for the Christmas Concert plus STUDENTS IN GRADE 6 AND 7 SHOULD NOT FORGET ABOUT THE CLASSROOM DECLAMATION CONTEST NEXT WEEK!!

Hi Gr 7 parents,

This evening there may be some confusion regarding the church history test for tomorrow.  It will be a take home test, which the students can start working on in class, but then take home. They are allowed to use their notes, textbooks, and whatever other resources available to them.  As a result, I told them they did not need to study this evening for the test, as there is not anything they will need to 'memorize' per se.  They can read their notes over if you like, but I do not think it will help them do any better on the test because they will have their textbooks available anyways.

Also, there is a volleyball tournament for next Friday afternoon at CCHS. More details to follow.

Thanks,

MR

Reading grade 6 and 7:  We will be reading No Ordinary Day by Deborah Ellis over the next month.  Deborah Ellis is more famous for her trilogy, The Breadwinner, a story about a girl in Afghanistan.  The book is meant to trigger discussions having to do with our Social Studies themes of child labour, third world countries, poverty, and leprosy.  I intend to keep you up to date on each chapter as we go through it, so that you will be ready for any questions that your children might ask you in connection with the book.

This week, (Tuesday for grade 7, and Friday for grade 6), we will read chapter 1 which finds our heroine, Valli, in her poverty-stricken hometown in India.  Her job is to collect coal to supplement the family income.  She is not allowed to attend the outdoor school that is set up outside behind the tea shop.  She wishes she were a goat so that she wouldn't always be so hungry.  She thinks she has 'magic feet' but doesn't realize that she actually has no feeling in her feet because she has leprosy.  Then she discovers that her 'auntie' is actually just a woman who was paid by her own family to watch over her.  She decides to hop on a truck and run away, but she has no idea where or when the truck will stop.
