No Ordinary Day Summary: (chapters 8-15) Dr. Indra takes Valli to the hospital where she checks her feet and gives her a good meal. The highlight of the day for Valli was looking through a microscope at her own blood. Her happiness is shattered, however, when she wakes up the following morning and sees lepers in her dormitory. She runs away and begins living on the streets again. Her difficulty in readjusting to homelessness after such promise was held out to her is manifested in her meanness and sadness. She manages to get into a mall where she steals from a table in the food court and tries to buy a book before getting thrown out. Finally, she faces the truth that she needs to go back to the hospital. At the hospital, no one knows what to do with her until Dr. Indra arrives. She presents Valli with two options: stay for treatment and respect the lepers or go back to the streets. She decides to stay. Her first revelation comes when she really looks at the tea lady (leper) for the first time. She finds that she is able to look past her missing nose and fingers. All her tiredness catches up to her, and she spends a lot of time sleeping in her very first bed. During her waking hours, she wants to learn as much as she can. She learns about the circulatory system and how to make pie charts. She is given her first Christmas present and her first hug. When the book ends, she is about to taste ice cream for the first time.

No Ordinary Day Summary (chapters 5-7): Valli was trying to sleep in front of a computer store when the sound of police sirens forces her to finish her sleep in the cemetery where it was quieter and no one would notice her blanket and warm jacket and try to steal them. Many other homeless Indians were also sleeping in the cemetery, taking advantage of the fact that the guard was incapacitated from home-brewed booze. In the morning, she escapes the cemetery before the guard can wake her up with his long stick. She spends a pleasant hour chatting with a fortune teller, until she notices that his feet have the tell-tale signs of leprosy. After fleeing in fear, she realizes that she is hungry, so she goes to a tea-seller who has sometimes given her tea for free. She nearly doesn't get any because the tea-seller's brother is angry that he is always giving tea to street urchins, but she finally gets her tea. She enjoys it while talking to some clay statutes of two gods who, she feels, seem to be smiling at her. However, she is still hungry, so she begins diving in the Ganges River for the coins people throw into it in order to be blessed. Unfortunately, she can't find any before she gets very tired, and so she steals the coins from a little girl who is momentarily distracted. Then she disappears under the water before the little girl and her family can figure out where the coins went. When she gets out of the water, she sees a woman reading a Bible by a cremation pit. She is a doctor who immediately notices that Valli doesn't realize that she is standing on some hot coals from the pit. She wants to take Valli with her to the hospital, but Valli is too distrustful to go with her in the taxi, and so the two of them begin the long walk to the hospital.

Reading grade 6 and 7: Time for a summary of this week's chapters 2-4!
Valli's 'happiest day' continues as she travels high on top of a coal truck. This is very exciting for her because it is her very first ride in a motorized vehicle, and she sees green fields for the first time. Finally, the truck stops, and she is discovered. After some arguing, the two men take her to a beautiful middle-aged woman. She seems to be the owner of the large home with many women and children who seem well-clothed and fed (it is a brothel, but Valli never realizes it). For the first time, Valli doesn't have to eat the leftover food from her cousins, and she also gets her first bath. It is after the bath, when one of the women is cutting her toenails, that Valli's leprosy is discovered. She doesn't know why they throw her out so quickly. Dejected and lonely, Valli wanders around Kolkata until an old man and his goat make her smile. He advises her to give away the soap she still carries from her bath, and, in so doing, she makes friends with a homeless family whose language she doesn't speak. She begins to develop the philosophy and behaviours she needs to survive as a homeless person: she decides that, since everything on earth is borrowed, she doesn't need to own anything. She resumes her enjoyment of living.

Hi Gr 7 parents,
This evening there may be some confusion regarding the church history test for tomorrow. It will be a take home test, which the students can start working on in class, but then take home. They are allowed to use their notes, textbooks, and whatever other resources available to them. As a result, I told them they did not need to study this evening for the test, as there is not anything they will need to 'memorize' per se. They can read their notes over if you like, but I do not think it will help them do any better on the test because they will have their textbooks available anyways.
Also, there is a volleyball tournament for next Friday afternoon at CCHS. More details to follow.
Thanks,
MR

Reading grade 6 and 7: We will be reading No Ordinary Day by Deborah Ellis over the next month. Deborah Ellis is more famous for her trilogy, The Breadwinner, a story about a girl in Afghanistan. The book is meant to trigger discussions having to do with our Social Studies themes of child labour, third world countries, poverty, and leprosy. I intend to keep you up to date on each chapter as we go through it, so that you will be ready for any questions that your children might ask you in connection with the book.
This week, (Tuesday for grade 7, and Friday for grade 6), we will read chapter 1 which finds our heroine, Valli, in her poverty-stricken hometown in India. Her job is to collect coal to supplement the family income. She is not allowed to attend the outdoor school that is set up outside behind the tea shop. She wishes she were a goat so that she wouldn't always be so hungry. She thinks she has 'magic feet' but doesn't realize that she actually has no feeling in her feet because she has leprosy. Then she discovers that her 'auntie' is actually just a woman who was paid by her own family to watch over her. She decides to hop on a truck and run away, but she has no idea where or when the truck will stop.

Important Info for the next few weeks...
GRADE 7 - PLEASE BRING 12 DOZ CUPCAKES TO SCHOOL TOMORROW!
As many of you may or may not know, my wife and I will be travelling to Holland for two weeks, beginning next week, in celebration of my grandparents' 60th Wedding Anniversary. As a result, there will be two people taking over for me, one for the first week, and another for the second week. In order to make planning etc. easier for them, we hope to wrap up the units we are currently working on next week so they can teach new units. Ending a unit always means tests, and so I thought I would give everyone plenty of time to prepare.
Gr 6:
Math - p.273 #2-7 due tomorrow
Math - Unit 7 Test - Wednesday October 23
Science 6 - Chapter 6 Test - Tuesday October 22 (yes, we will return from the field trip in time to write the test :)
Gr 7:
Bible - Lesson 7 #1-10 due tomorrow
Bible - Unit 2 Test - Thursday October 24
Memory Work - Ps 37:12 (the Eaglet for this week is wrong), Rom 8:1-8 due Thursday

Science - Chapter 6 Test - Tuesday October 22
Thanks,
MR

Social Studies grade 6 and 7: students in grade 7 are working in pairs on a project that is due on October 31, 2013 (Open House Day) called, "Identity, Society, and Culture: Canada, the United States of America, and Japan." The purpose of the project is to show the effect of geographical regions, climate, and resources on the cultures of each of the three countries. In connection with the project, the grade 7 students are reading Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. Grade 6 student pairs will begin working on the project tomorrow. I do not anticipate that the students should have to work on it at home, since ample class time will be provided.
Reading grade 6 and 7: not to be outdone, grade 6 students are currently reading Wild Ride, A Graphic Guide Adventure, illustrated by Mike Deas. We have just received word from the Sardis Library that they are eager to have us attend their author reading by none other than.....Mike Deas!!!Please sign the permission form for this field trip when it comes out next week and consider setting aside Tuesday morning, October 22, to chaperone on this very exciting trip! Grade 6 + 7:
A permission form went home today regarding a fieldtrip on Thursday...please make sure to sign it and return it to school tomorrow.
Student leadership team applications have been reviewed and a team has been chosen. The kids will find out tomorrow, but seeing as there were 23 applications submitted (a record breaking number!) and only 8 positions available, there is a high likelihood that there will be some disappointed students tomorrow. Please make sure to talk about this with your child just in case they are one of the ones who did not 'make the cut'.
Gr 6:
Math - p 67 #1,2,3,5
Please make sure to practice times tables with your child on a regular basis. The current Math is fairly simple, but soon it will grow harder, especially if a student does not know their multiplication tables. This is absolutely vital to ensuring your child's success in Math this year.
Gr 7:
Math p. 76 # 1,2 - today's math was very challenging for many of the students. Please help them if you can and otherwise simply encourage them to try their best. As always, they do not need to spend all night trying to figure out one problem.
Memory Work: Ps 17:4, Romans 8: 3,4
That's all!

Readers' Theater 7: Th: student presentations
AR tests and Book Talks grade 6 and 7: Students are required to read at least 7 books for Book Talk presentations, each of which must take place in a different continent. These books can double up as AR tests, but they should do at least one Book Talk and one AR test each month (excluding December, March, and June). The books should be at their reading level (STAR Reading Tests will be conducted by the end of the week) and should NOT be informational books. Eager beavers who wish to finish them all in the first month are welcome to do so! We are hoping that the library will be up and running next week. In the meantime, feel free to use books from Miss Lanting's classroom library or books from the public library.

First Day of School!
Welcome back to all the students! Hopefully they are as excited as their teachers about returning back to school.
This school year not much has changed in the intermediate department, but for those grade 6 students who are new to having two teachers and classrooms, here's how it works:
Miss Lanting is the Gr 6 homeroom teacher, and Mr. Rekers is the Gr 7 homeroom teacher. This means that at the beginning of the days and at lunch time, you will be with your homeroom teacher. Your homeroom teacher is also the one who will be teaching you Bible, Personal Planning, and Art. The rest of your classes depend on which subjects you are in.
Miss Lanting teaches Language Arts (Reading, Writing, and Speaking), Social Studies, and French to both grades.
Mr. Rekers teaches Math, Science, Physical Education, and Computers to both grades.
Your schedules will be given to you on the first day of school, and you are expected to use these to make sure you are prepared for each class.
More information is soon to follow!
